Honors Western Civilization

Today in class, Mr. Schick had us vote on whether we should have the test tomorrow or the Monday we come back. We decided to take it the Monday we come back. We also did another outline on Hellenistic Culture.

Hellenistic Culture

  • Hellenistic Culture in Alexandria: 
    • Hellenistic Culture: blend of Greek, Indian, Persian, and Egyptian Culture.
    • Trade + Culture Diversity:
      • Alexandria became a foremost center of commerce and civilization/culture.
    • Alexandria's Attractions.
      • Alexander's coffin.
      • Pharos (lighthouse).
      • Library, which had 500,000 papyrus scrolls.
  • Science and Technology
    • Astronomy-
      • Aristarchus- found out that the Sun is at least x300 bigger than the Earth, Earth and other planets revolved around the Sun.
      • Ptolemy- disagrees with Aristarchus, says that Earth is the center of the universe, this is taught for the next 14 centuries.
      • Eratosthenes- estimated the real size of Earth, says it's round.
    • Mathematics and Physics-
      • Euclid- wrote the book on Geometry (Elements).
      • Archimedes- estimated the value of Pi, explained the Law of the Lever.
        • Archimedes Screw- could raise water from the ground.

Jillian Kurzmann 5/17/18 Honors Western Civilization Today in class, we took notes on a powerpoint. Charlemagne Unites Germanic Kingdoms Main Idea: Many Germanic Kingdoms that succeeded the Roman Empire were reunited under Charlemagne's empire. Why it matters now: Charlemagne spread Christian civilization throughout Northern Europe, which is where some (not all of) us came from. Setting the Stage Middle Ages=Medieval period. Ad 476- AD 1453. (From the end of the Roman Empire to the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks). Medieval Europe is fragmented.
