- The Fall of the Roman Empire
- Emperors Attempt Reform
- The empire survived another 200 years.
- This was due to reform emperors and the empire's division into two-arts.
- Diocletian Reforms the Empire.
- Diocletian, a strong-willed army leader, became emperor in AD 284.
- He ruled with an iron fist and limited personal freedoms.
- He restored order to the empire and increased its strength.
- He doubled the size of the army and sought to control inflation by setting fixed prices for goods.
- He claimed descent from the Roman Gods to himself seem godlike.
- Diocletian believed that the empire is too large and too complex for one ruler.
- He divided it into East and West and claimed the Eastern half. Diocletian retired in AD 305 due to illness.
- His plan failed.
- Civil War broke out.
- By 311, 4 rivals were competing for power.
- Constantine ran for power.
- Constantine Moves the Capital.
- Constantine gained control of the Western part in AD 312.
- He continued many of the social and economic policies of Diocletian.
- He also controlled the East.
- He moves the capital to Byzantium.
- The center power moved from Rome to the East.
- The capital was renamed Constantinople.
- The Western Empire Crumbles
- The final collapse was a result of worsening internal problems, the separation of the West from the East, and outside invasion.
- Germanic Invasions
- Since Julius Caesar's days, Germanic people had gathered on the northern borders and coexisted in peace with Rome.
- The Mongol nomads moved in and destroyed everything in their path.
- In fear, the Germanic People pushed into Roman lands.
- The Romans called them "barbarians".
- The Western Empire couldn't field an army.
- Attila the Hun.
- The huns became a threat.
- In 444, they had a chief named Attila.
- He terrorized the empires.
- Famine and disease prevented them from taking over the capital.
- Attila died in 453.
- An Empire No More
- Romulus Augustulus
- Last empire
- Roman power on the Western half disappeared.
- The Eastern half prevented the spread of culture.
- The Byzantine Emperors saw themselves as heirs of Augustus Caesar.
- The empire endured until 1453 when it fell upon the Ottoman Turks.
- The Western collapsed but, its culture didn't.
- It still influences, today.
