Today in class, we took notes on Christianity from the textbook.

  • Roman power spread to Judea.
  • Jews still believed that they would be freed by the Messiah.
  • Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
  • He was baptized by John the Baptist.
  • At the age of 30, Jesus began his public ministry.
  • He taught monotheism.
  • He stressed the importance of love for all.
  • 12 men followed Jesus called the Apostles.
  • He attracted large crowds of people.
  • The Roman government accused Jesus at Pontius Pilate.
  • Jesus rose from the dead and was called the Messiah.
  • He started Christianity.
  • Christianity slowly spread through the Roman Empire.
  • Paul, the apostle, had an enormous influence on Christian's development.
  • He had a vision of Jesus. 
  • Pax Romana was ideal for Christianity to spread.
  • In AD 66, a band of Jews rebelled against Rome.
  • In AD 70, the Romans stormed Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple Complex.
  • The Jewish fortress near Masada held out until 73 AD.
  • About a half million Jews were killed n the course of the rebellion.
  • Another half million died in three years of fighting.
  • Most Jews were driven from their homeland. 
  • This dispersal of the Jews is called the Diaspora.
  • Christians were seen as opposition to the Roman rule. 
  • Romans blamed Christians fro economic troubles.
  • Pax Romana began to to crumble and Christians were crucified.
  • Romans exiled, imprisoned, or executed Christians for not believing in the Roman Gods.
  • Some were persecuted as martyrs.
  • Christianity became a powerful force.
  • Constantine ended persecution of Jews due to a vision of Jesus.
  • Christianity became the empire's official religion.
  • Peter became the head of bishops.
  • They decreed Peter to be the first Pope.
  • Disagreements grew with Christianity.
  • Contradiction of Christianity was called heresy.
  • The Nicene Creed was written briefly after the New Testament.
  • St. Augustine became a Father of the Church.
  • The Roman Empire crumbled.
